STILL ON ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS

Image
This article of mine was written 5 years ago, a time when the world was abuzz over the rising scourge of illegal immigrants taking life-threatening risk to reach Europe in pursuit of better life.  The slave trade report in Libya , the inhuman experience in border nations and the  massive deportation of migrants to their home countries by various African governments  were believed to be the anti-climax of the ugly trend. It is however, disturbing that  over 50 Nigerians were among about 110 migrants rescued en route Italy . It is against this backdrop that I visited the archive and dug out this article. The remains the same. "We have become used to the suffering of others.  Has any one of us wept for these persons who were on the boat? For the young mothers carrying their babies? For these men who were looking for a means of supporting their families? We are a society which has forgotten how to weep, how to experience compassion." The above ...

#FUELSCARCITY: Thank You President Buhari, We All Got Served

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari                Photo Credit: Nigerian Eye Let me say an immense Thank you to President Muhammadu Buhari and his able team for that Christmas and New Year gift. I hope other Nigerians are also indebted enough to join in lauding the All Progressive Congress ruling government.  2017 was an amazing year topsy-turvy and I guess the end gift was something that will remain etched in the memory of millions for a long time. It is unquantifiable and calls for no jostling; everyone got - and are still getting - a fair share. If you don’t go through the rigour of sleepless hours and endless queue at filling stations , you spend longer time waiting for commercial cabs and pay heavy fare – that is if you even get. If you avoid the long queues, you will spend your high earned money buying adulterated product at costly price by the road side , one that may even take a toll on your car engine and shorten its lifespan. If yo...

A MEPHISTOPHELIAN SEASON OF JUNGLE JUSTICE

In suitable allusion to the holy book, “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” True to that verse, we have had among many, a season of pension scams, a season of electoral robbery, a season of abduction in the South, a season of open letters. In a never ending sub-division is the season of petrol scarcity, party cross-carpeting is not left out while Bomb blast and school girls abduction has joined the fray. And now, we present to you, the season of jungle justice. Recent time has not been good for strangers or anyone with a unit of insanity. People who seem to tarry or look mentally deranged have heavily been victims of mob attacks. Although, the trend is nothing new, having come back to public gear in the era of Clifford Orji, yet, it has been sparing and the cases evidential. But recent weeks have witnessed a surge. The development as a matter of fact did not just become viral. It is an aftermath of a pent up fury. After a series of u...

AFTER ALL, I AM NOT A SERVICE PROVIDER

It was around 7:45pm that day. Darkness had already enveloped everywhere. The compound was silent except for the chirping of crickets and the rev of generator engines nearby. I lay on a couch glancing through an old newspaper, sinking in the numerous negative stories that have engulfed the country especially the political arena for some times now. My bother-in-law-to-be who came to spend some times with me as a result of the on-going ASUU strike had turned around to pick his phone that can be controversially argued as making noise instead of ringing. The phone, a Chinese product that has seen more than better days itself had apparently interrupted my indoor repose as its vibration left the whole room quivering. Just after their lousy and non-ignorable exchange of banters, I overheard him respond to the person on the other side (obviously a lady) about using a Blackberry phone. He repeated the same word as if trying to assure her of his words. Then there was a shout of vociferous h...

A LETTER TO THE POLICE ON THE MISSING FISH

“It is with shock that I announce to you that some enemies of progress have reduced the normal three fishes inside "TITUS" sardine to two fishes. NAFDAC has to act now or we will protest. If this situation is not addressed, you will open "TITUS" Sardine one day and find only the oil...!!! Dear Police, It is with utmost deference and unquestioned patriotism that I write this letter to you and I, like other Nigerians hope you get to read and act on it. I know you are busy and heavily laden with matters of public interest, especially with this long-running state of insecurity in the nation; the Boko Haram terrorism fight, the rampant kidnap occurrences, ethnic and communal clashes, the mounting day-to-day criminal activities that seem to enjoy a field day in Nigeria not to mention the shocking raid on police posts and slaying of security personnel. Your hands seem full, yet, I cannot suffer to remain silent with this very crucial alarm recently being raised by...
